Do you have a passion for education and enjoy working with young people?The St Robert Lawrence Trust have opportunities for 2 Apprentice Teaching Assistants to be based from their Principal Academy, St John Houghton.Starting in September, you will work as part of a team of teaching assistants under the leadership of the Head of Learning Support

As a Teaching Assistant you will work as part of a team of teaching assistants under the leadership of the Head of Learning Support to support students access the curriculum in the classroom.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Deliver learning activities under the guidance of class teachers
• Work closely with class teachers to contribute to the management of pupil behaviour, to maintain order and an appropriate working environment including the implementation of the school’s behaviour policy
• Report to teachers on the behaviour of pupils during the lesson and any issues arising
• Establish and promote productive relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
• Promote the inclusion of all pupils in the class
• Liaise with teachers and other relevant agencies regarding the work set for a pupil/class/group
• Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other relevant professionals, in liaison with the Head of Learning Support and the teacher, to support pupils’ learning and progress
• Effectively communicate the work set by the teacher to the pupils and ensure that they are aware of the teacher’s expectations
• Encourage the pupils to interact and work cooperatively with others to ensure all pupils are engaged on the task set
• Respond knowledgeably to any questions from pupils about process and procedures
• Observe and report on pupil performance
• Ensure the health and safety and welfare of pupils is maintained at all times
• Promote social and emotional development of pupils
• Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures
• Provide literacy / numeracy support to allow access to the curriculum
• Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans
• Deliver lessons prepared by teachers in the absence of the teacher
• Report all accidents/incidents to the appropriate person/people for action
• Deal with the day to day requirements of the pupil being supported
• By agreement, accompany teaching staff and pupils on educational visits
• Contribute to and uphold the overall ethos, aims and work of the school
• Participate in appropriate school-based meetings and training activities
• Undertake any administrative duties relevant and appropriate to the post
• Take an active part in appraising their own work against agreed priorities and targets in accordance with the school’s performance management and supervision arrangements
• Work in line with the Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants
• Maintain confidentiality at all times and observe Data Protection Guidelines
• Understand and comply with the school’s equal opportunities policies
• Carry out any duties that may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties, responsibilities and grade of the post as directed by the Headteacher or Head of Learning Support

This appointment will be conditional on undertaking a programme leading to Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, completing modules as part of the Apprenticeship programme and attending college when required. Failure to progress satisfactorily will result in the apprenticeship being terminated.

Working Week

8:15am – 4:15pm Monday - Thursday 8:15am - 3:45pm Friday 37 Hours per week


Requirements & Prospects


Ideally a minimum 4 GCSE’s C and above Including Maths, English and ICT (or equivalents)

The Apprentice will work towards a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship for Supporting Teaching and Learning in School. The qualifications consist of:
• Edexcel Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF)
• Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QFC)
• Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools (QFC)
• Level 2 Functional Skills English, Maths & ICT (if applicable)

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3)
